The Boxing tree

by TheRealSeer

I am a boxer, a good one at that. I have all the skills in place to take me to the top of the tree in this sport, I mean the very top of the boxing tree!
Each branch I climb on to brings new and fresh challenges, but also and more importantly in this modern age, new options!

You see, at one time there was only one route up the boxing tree. When I was a kid I'd watch in awe as fighters climbed over each other to reach the top. When they got there, they would defend their position to the last!

Nowadays, the tree is so much older and has many more branches... So many that on each level, it is now possible to step all the way around the tree and find the easiest branch to climb to the next level.
I can 'cherry pick my way up there. When I reach the top, I can still find room to manoeuvre and cherry pick my challengers too!

Yep, an easier route than taking on all those guys who say the old route is the one to prove your worth.
If I shout long enough and tell people I am the best, sooner or later they will believe it!
If people say, "You haven't proven you're the best".. I'll say, "You prove I'm not"!

Who am I? That depends on your point of view and whether I've convinced you or not...

Have you someone in mind already?

I'm sure if the hat fits, you'll make them wear it!

Very good Seer :)

It could be one of many, but one particular fighter stands out above the others.

Nicely put, Seer. In that brief article we have a synopsis of all that is wrong with modern boxing.

Who are you ? Sadly, as Martin says, you could be one of a great many, though your reference to great skills narrows it down a bit, and I have an inkling that you are one of Wales' finest sons.

Hatton? Pacman? PBF?

They're all on the tree lol Hatton and Pac went onto one of the dodgy branches at first but have returned to the easy ones whereas PBF was using all the dodgy branches a few years ago but has taken easier ones in recent years too.

How many of those 'top boxers' in the world that fall into this 'tree category also fall into the above criteria? :D

Great post, just found it through the link you gave under the recent 'World Class' thread.....
I agree, nothing frustrates me more then when someone clearly has the skills to beat anyone in their division but the fights with the other top contenders/'champions' aren't made.
Roy Jones Jr. is the one who fits this catergory most for me.... I think at his peak he could have beaten anyone around from middle to light-heavy, but who did he fight? I don't want to say bums, mexican road sweepers or tomato cans as I don't want to be disrespectful- Virgil Hill and Clinton Woods, to name but two, are clearly none of these, but neither are they close to being a Great or even a Nearly Great!
The Hopkins fight was before he peaked and he was never given a re-match, and Toney was clearly struggling to make the weight, and was never given a re-match. I'm not knocking what Roy did against these two guys- I just wish he'd have stayed fighting this calibre of opponent. McCallum was at his best at light-middle and middle and Roy fought him at light-heavy when Mike was clearly a bit past it.....
No Benn, Eubank, Collins, Watson, Calzaghe, McClellan, Jackson, Nunn etc etc etc.... I suspect it wasn't entirely Roy's fault at times but he could have done more to secure fights with top-class opposition. A lot more.
Sorry to go off on one like that, I just got a bit carried away! There's probably a Roy Jones Jr. thread somewhere this this would be more relevant on but he just seemed to fit your description perfectly.

Notice how different fighters all fit?

Above I count several, so, I reckon it depends on your own point of view.

As I said, if the hat fits....

Thing is though, we can all argue about a fighters merits until the cows come home, when really the whole sport is subject to the 'Boxing Tree'.

Maybe we should be instead looking for old school types who take on anyone..

Now where's my picture of Miguel Cotto... :D
