Go on Paddy, i reckon Paddy will stay AMA, he has been offered 2 pro contracts that i know about and possibly more from English promoters but he has a Pro career there for the taking with 3 if not 4 Irish promoters. I hope Paddy stays Ama and kicks arses in the 2012 and get a decenty Pro deal. Paddy has age on his side still to point i suppose.

How does he fight for Ireland if he is a "belfast" boxer Gareth? Does it always work like that because of amateur associations of something or is there another reason?

I'd like to see him stay ama - good on him if he does!

I thought Barnes had a style that looked more suited to the pro game, anyhow. Like a little Barry McGuigan.

North and South of Ireland all fight AMA under IABA.

Boxers based in Belfast can chose to box for GB or IRE, the main issue is most of these guys live at home and dont get much money so they would find it hard to make training sessions in GB Mainland as it involves flights etc, if they train in dublin they can hop on a train and go down for the day. Most of the Irish team are on the high performance team before they start to fight for their country so have already made steps into making the Irish squad.

All Athletes from Northern Ireland can compete for Ireland or Britain.
It's the reason why the British team is now just referred to as Great Britain nowdays, rather than Great Britain and Northern Ireland as Northern Irish athletes don't necessarily compete for team GB.

I agree Martin that Barnes seems well suited to the pros, however I don't think he should turn pro unless he gets a good offer from America. Barnes competes in the Light-Flyweight(106 lbs) division, he is very much a Minimumweight by professional standards. A small enough one at that.

The lowest Weight division at British/Commonwealth/European title level is Flyweight. That's a full half stone above where Paddy would ideally be fighting. So turning pro in Britain or Ireland would automatically put him at a disadvantage. Yes he could go down the route of fighting for inter whatever titles and eventually lesser(WBU/IBO) World titles should he be successful. However there are no minimumweights in Europe currently and pretty much every opponent would have to be brought in from South or Central America.

If he were to be based out of the United States it would make things a lot simpler and if he is successful in the early part of his career he can always have some fights at home like Duddy and Lee.
I'm sure being an Irish Olympic medal winner he could generate some decent interest on the East Coast of the US and build up a nice following.

paddy should turn pro now - why wait 4 years? He could train all that time then get a knock and then he's wasted four years - if he strikes while the iron is hot (now) then he could have made a packet - I'm sure he'll be a good ticket seller!

The draw then will be the same a big Irish following, doesnt really matter when he goes Pro now, he will always be the Olympic medalist. anyway he'll qualify for Ireland in 2012 no problem.
