It's fascinating looking at Buckley's list of opponents. His record reads like a who's who of the British lower weights of the last two decades. Hope he bows out with a win. Seems like only yesterday that he was having his 200th fight.

Did anyone see the lovely picture and write up on the front cover of "The Times" today ?

Peter Puckley makes the front cover of The Times.

Hatton, FMJ, DLH, Enzo etc would love to have front page coverage but never get it and the old work horse Bucky gets his moment. Nice one!!!

He was on Radio 2 as well at around 2pm. The DJ had a short interview with him and Frank Maloney joined in also, saying he (Buckley) might have turned out a champion if he were managed differently.

Was quite impressed as the DJ mentioned that he was labelled as "the worst boxer in the world" but he quickly realised that what had been written was nonsense...he asked questions about Buckley's defence and another journeyman (whose name I didn't hear) who drew against him said that Buckley actually had a very good defence. I expected a lot worse but it was only a five-minute job as you would expect.

I bet Peter's cutting up those clips and putting them in a scrapbook!

The Times article said Buckley delberately chose to become a journeyman rather than try to become a champ - anypone know if that's true or just journalistic licence?

I'm guessing after a few defeats it was either try n get fights and improve your career but not make much money or get fights easily away from home and make a good bit of money. Was interesting to hear that Steve Bunce said he was in thwe top 10 earning boxers for the last few years. On the front of todays Boxing News, the Times, even made national news yesterday, fairplay to him he deserves it, to the outside world theyre calling him worlds worst boxer etc etc but those who know boxing know different. Hope they show his fight on sky friday fight night too.

Without the Peter Buckley's of this world, the sport simply would not survive.

I get agitated when folk call the likes of him a 'bum'... Usually folk that have never been in the ring, at that! :?

How many of his opponents have gone on to be British/Euro/World champions?

The guy is a legend and was rightly given royal accolade for his services to the sport.

I hope he stays on as a coach...

Tell you what...

Amir Khan could do with Peter teaching him his defence. :D

Heh, stuff Freddie Roach, and get Nobby Nobbs instead. Buckley did say he wanted to stay in boxing and become a coach (interview on Radio 2 I caught a few days ago) and it would be interesting to see what kind of fighters he'd churn out - assuming he does actually stay in the game.

Probably well-schooled journeymen at a guess, but considering he's struggled to attack (injuries and whatnot) he'd probably be better purely as a defensive coach.
