Tyson Fury has turned down the option of training with Emanuel Steward in favour of teaming up with Robbie McCrakken. British super-featherweight champion Kevin Mitchell has turned down the opportuity of training with Freddie Roach in favour of training with Londons Jimmy Tibbs.

I suppose the argument can be made that the US guys can't give their full attention the way that a smaller time UK based trainer can.

I'd imagine it's not as straight forward as a simple choice.
Alex Arthur went with Freddie Roach, I remember one night he was defending his Brit/Comm/Euro titles and he received his fight instructions from Roach the night before whilst he was in his hotel room by telephone.
It has worked well for Amir Khan because Amir Khan generates lots of money and his fights are PPV in the UK. But you need a trainer who will be in your corner on fight night.

A whole bunch of welsh fighters (Hope, Owen et al) seem to be jumping ship to the Talon gym right now though. Not sure why to be honest but seems to have become a trend.

Does Khan live in the US for periods of time or does Roach just takes charge of his training a month or 2 before his fights?? what way does it work?

I agree with what Martin says here. The top trainers in the world have extremely limited time and are going to work with the money generators first.
I do feel that both off them should have taken some initiative and trained with them for a bit to pick up some tips etc.
I know Frank Warren wouldnt have wanted it, but I am pretty sure Mick Hennessey would have been more than happy with Fury living and fighting in America for a few months to get the name up and get him learning from a great heavyweight coach like Steward.

Khan travels to, and completes his training camps at Freddie Roach's Wild Card gym in L.A.
When Khan's not in training camp, he's living in Bolton.
The Yank trainers like the two mentioned will be asking for a lot more money too so that probably comes into it as well, I remember Holyfield letting Steward go after the Bowe rematch as he was asking for too much money but when your career is on the line I for one would pay the extra. Think Fury has made a mistake picking McCracken over Steward, Manny is good at getting the big guys to fight to their strengths & I reckon Fury would get a lot out of that.

Manny would get Fury fighting much better because with Steward its all about the jab, jab & jab.
Furys got a good reach and if he wants to suceed at world level hes gotta learn to use that jab much better than he is now.
Too right mate his arms look long as fuck so why not take advantage of it, McCracken is a nice guy & stuff but if we're honest all of his fighters have shocking defences so he's not the type of trainer I'd have chosen for Fury.
