I agree that Choi ruined him, he looked quite a decent prospect at British level before that. If you keep on getting stopped though, its no good long term for his health. He may come back after a long rest but truthfully, he shouldnt really. I wish him all the best in his retirement, even though he is still only 26.

Never liked him, he got a robbery against Simpson and was a dirty bastard in that fight. I was so happy when Choi knocked 7 shades of out of him

Yeah if he had any fans outside Liverpool I think they all disappeared after watching his dirty fouling against Simpson, the fact that he got a shocker of a decision just added to that.

Agreed, I lost any desire to support the guy after that fight. However, I still felt a little sorry for him after Choi destroyed him so brutally.
What's happening with Choi? He went home because he couldn't get fights and I heard that he was back but I've not seen him.

I used to like Mathews, they showed some of his earlier fights on the bbc & I thought he looked quite good, he gave Foster Jr a bit of a tanking & things were looking good for him.

Choi signed on with Spencer Fearon who'd been having some good shows down south with Kresnik Qato (?) & they were both on a bill together not long ago, I heard Spencer on Bunce's radio show talking about both Qato & Choi being on the same bill & how great the support would be, that was a few months back & not heard anything more of him since.

Derry Mathews calls time on his career

    Derry Mathews:
"A lot of people have asked 'Why did you
ever fight Choi?' In this game, to be the best you've got to
beat the best, It was offered to me on a plate and I wanted
to take the fight. George [Vaughan] believed that I could beat
the fighter. I was beaten by a better man, there is no doubt
about it. No one in the country or the world wanted to fight
Choi and he's only boxed once since. He's had to retire as no
one will fight him. So I'll hold my hands up and say I've boxed
the best and I have always boxed the best. It was a hard
fight and maybe that might have been the difference."
