Prescott issues Mitchell warning

By Duncan Bech, Press Association Sport

Amir Khan's conqueror Breidis Prescott has warned Kevin Mitchell his power will claim another British prospect in their WBO lightweight title eliminator.

Feared Colombian puncher Prescott appeared to have done irreparable damage to Khan's career when he destroyed the Olympic silver medallist in 54 seconds little over a year ago.

Khan has since become a world champion and Prescott is hoping to follow suit - by dispatching Mitchell, Dagenham's highly-rated 25-year-old, in Newcastle on December 5.

"Kevin is a good fighter but with all due respect to him Amir is better," he said.

"It's a tough fight for me but I'm a lot better prepared for this fight than for when I fought Amir.

"Beating Amir was a very important night for me, the best night of my career. It really put my name on the map.

"Amir came to the fight undefeated and after beating him I got worldwide recognition.

"I want a repeat of what happened that night and have been training hard to achieve that.

"I was surprised I beat Amir so early but I have punching power so anything can happen."

Prescott possess a fearsome record of 18 knockouts in 21 wins, but lost his last outing on a split decision against Miguel Vazquez.

"I feel like I have a lot to prove. I beat Amir but you're only as good as your last fight," said Prescott.

"It's about proving something to myself. I'd consider giving Khan a rematch."

Mitchell, undefeated in 29 contests and hoping to lock horns himself with Khan in the future, claims he has the chin to soak up everything Prescott can throw at him.

"Prescott said he fancies Amir as more of a talent than me. I think Amir is unbelievable but if I hit him on the chin he will go," he said.

"Prescott is a big puncher and will be dangerous for all 12 rounds. He's been a dangerman throughout his career.

"But I can bang and in around 100 amateur and pro fights I've only been knocked down once - and then the fight finished on points."

Obviously I wouldn't want this to happen, but from a LOL@FrankWarren point-of-view, wouldn't it be funny if Prescott KO'd Mitchell in the 1st round.

Utterly hilarious, but I can't see it happening - Mitchell on popints or TKO.

I said this in another post the other day, Prescott just isnt that good. His power is his great equaliser. A Khan/Prescott rematch now would be a totally different affair.

Prescotts power looked pretty average in his last outing. I think Warren is making Mitchell test the water before setting up a Khan rematch. Its not gonna be too long til Khan has to face a top fighter and Warren will probably pull a Prescott re-match from his sleeve to buy more time for Amir.

Never been a fan of Mitchell while Prescotts win over Khan seems to flatter him.

Prescott is listed as 5′ 11″ with a 180cm reach against Mitchell who is listed as 5′ 8″ with a 173cm reach.

I'm going for the big Lightweight against the UK level Super Feather.

Prescott has a warm-up fight on the 19th.

Agreed... I think Prescott is not much more then a one hit wonder. His lost in his last fight surrpised me as a split decision. He got outworked the whole fight.

To be fair, he did that in his last fight. He actually moved up a weight division to do it, too.

Excellent match-up, to see if Prescott is just a big puncher and if Mitchell is out of his natural weight class. Personally, I think Mitchell is a natural super-featherweight, but if he has trouble making the weight he is wise to move up before it results in him getting ko'd as a result. There have been loads of boxers who have suffered the same fate as this, Manny Pacquiao, to name just one, and look at what he has done since he has moved up in weight. This fight should answer a lot of questions about both men and I think it will be a cracking fight. I really rate Kevin Mitchell, I think that he has all the qualities to be a future world champ but has gone a bit stale recently. As all you guys say, Prescott's equaliser is his big punching ability but is pretty limited with his boxing skills. I wish Mitchell all the luck in the world and hope that he can produce a fine winning performance but am way of the firepower that Prescott has.
